Ray Scheel, M.Ed.

Associate Director for Course Development, SHSU Online • Adjunct Instructor, Learning Technologies

Digital Learning & Course Operations

Welcome! I lead a team of Instructional Designers supporting digital learning initiatives across Sam Houston State University and partner institutions within the Texas State University System (TSUS). My focus centers on learning architectures, course quality benchmarks, accessibility, and translating complex curriculum goals into sustainable, scalable online delivery.

System Collaborations & State Initiatives

Much of my work bridges institutional boundaries, helping scale curriculum, unify educational technology, and curate open learning assets across Texas:

TSUS Online Shared Services Consortium

Through the TSUS Online Learning and Innovation Shared Services initiative launched in 2019, SHSU Online provides unified instructional design, LMS infrastructure, 24/7 technical desk escalations, and course quality governance across multiple sister institutions. As operational lead for course design and LMS consolidation, I work closely with academic leadership at:

THECB OERTX Digital Instruction Hub

Our team contributed significantly to the assembly and curation of the THECB OERTX Digital Instruction Hub. This open-access repository provides higher education faculty across Texas with vetted digital courseware, instructional design strategies, open educational resources (OER), and templates for blended and online delivery.

Instruction & Learning Technologies (LETE)

In addition to course development leadership, I serve as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of School of Teaching and Learning within SHSU's College of Education, teaching within the Bachelor of Science in Learning Technologies program.

I treat the classroom as an applied laboratory. In courses such as LETE 1303 (Learning Technology Tools) and LETE 2301 (Design and Development of Learning Materials), students move past superficial software tours into "debug-first" logic, troubleshooting real user breakdowns, understanding digital learning architectures, and learning how to author meaningful technical tickets and documentation.

Background & Community Service

I joined SHSU Online in 2011, having earned my Master of Education in Instructional Systems Design and Technology from SHSU and a B.S. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University (including teacher preparation coursework). Prior to higher education, I spent 15 years with the Windham School District as a systems analyst and database application developer within state correctional education.

Community Leadership & Scouting: I am a former Scoutmaster and Cubmaster, and currently serve as a Unit Commissioner within Scouting America. I believe deeply in outdoor education and youth character development; please visit BeAScout.org to learn more or join a local pack or troop. I also served on the board of Huntsville's Good Shepherd Mission for 16 years and continue to support local initiatives across Walker County.
